2021.10.25 13:26 Winniehiller GETTING ATTENTION vs PAYING ATTENTION

I just saw this interesting YouTube Ted Talk from Joseph Gordon-Levitt that I thought was worth sharing here. He talks about how obsessively trying to get attention can be destructive or interfere with both our creativity and our happiness.
It certainly can interfere with giving a moving and effective performance as an actor, because as I have said over and over…what you think about as you are acting really matters. If you are trying to get an audience to see you being emotional or dramatic…if you are trying to get them to think you are a great actor, you simply can’t be. That’s because acting is about paying attention to the person you are acting with and the situation they and your character are in. Over and over I tell you, “It’s not about you! It’s about the other character!” Acting is reacting. So in order to be to reactive in a scene you must remove yourself from the ego driven desire to be admired, and put all your focus on the other person. All your attention needs to be on them from your character’s point of view, as you respond to all that they do and say, thinking only your character’s thoughts…not your own.
Mr. Gordon-Levitt explains that the desire to “get attention” over “paying attention” affects our everyday lives, too. It’s sort of a plague in our society being used to help others profit from our addiction. It is not until we actually make “paying attention” a priority that we can stop being so overly competitive with one another and can enter into collaborative relationships so we can create with and be inspired by one another.
That’s what this community is all about: Connecting to others, working together, creating together and performing truthfully as we act responsively, paying attention to one another.
If you want to get more involved and start to do that, here, I hope you will attend my free Intro to actingclass. I’m giving a Zoom class this Wednesday, October 27, at 4:00 pm Pacific Time. In the class I will teach you how to get the most out of this subreddit class. Message me your email and we will send you the Zoom meeting link.
And here is that YouTube video link for JGL’s Ted Talk. I think there is a deeper message there, even beyond the words he says. The truth of the matter is, we need to become less selfishly focused and turn our attention to others in order to be truly creative in our lives.

2021.10.25 13:26 pieholic Playing 50 games in a row with every legend and reviewing them (#4: Seer)

#01: Loba | #02: Wattson | #03: Wraith
#04: Seer
Disclaimer: I am a relatively new player to Apex with approximately 250 hours of game time according to Steam. (I played a little bit during launch so it's actually probably more like 260 hours).
I am challenging myself to play 50 BR games with every legend to keep the grind for new legends interesting and learn about all the legends, as there were legends I would never play. Hopefully this lets me find out about my playstyle a bit more and discover if there are any legends that really click with me. I am sharing this to ApexUniversity to hopefully help other newcomers to look through and find a Legend that may click with them. I am not saying that I am a great player, nor do I think my analysis will be correct in every situation.
The third character is Seer, picked thanks to the comment by Jayelly - Below is my opinion of him and how I found each of her abilities to be. If you are more of a visual/auditory person, I made a video on Youtube
The Youtube video should show gameplay and firing range clips to better demonstrate why I thought the way I did.

Statistics:
50 pub games (21 Olympus, 27 World's Edge / 46 Autofill trios, 4 Premade duos)
5 wins (10%)
16 top 5s (Not counting wins / 32%)
457 Average Damage (Highest 1757, lowest 81)
So before I go into each of the character abililties, I think there was a meaningful difference in my placements, but not damage. I try to play every game pretty consistently as explained here with more of a 'learn the character' mind set than trying to maximize placement. Usually, I only get about 10 top 5s, so the fact that I had a whopping 16 with Seer, but not outputting more damage was surprising. My guess is that because Seer's abilities reveal enemies for an extended duration, I was able to help my teammates carry me to victory more often, and we could decide on which enemy to chase down, and which to let go and rotate.

Passive: Hear and visualize the heartbeats of enemies within 75m when aiming down sights.
Seer's passive is a special indicator on the crosshair that shows enemy direction within 75M. You can also ADS even with no weapons to trigger the passive. The indicator disappears when you fire, but you can stop firing and it flashes back up towards the end to get the direction of the next enemy. Thanks to Seer's passive, i was able to gain a visual assistance in addition to auditory signals that I already relied on. This gives a lot of information during firefights but it can also obscure vision and overload you. I found myself getting confused often when there were more than 1~2 squads fighting in one area, especially as the passive also detects already downed enemies.
This was one of the reasons I quickly stopped playing King's Canyon as Seer. Because the map was small and encouraged third parties, there was just too much information so I couldn't sift through and find the ones that were relevant to my squad. And this will be explained later, but Seer is a third party MAGNET. My gameplay schedule didn't align with KC as well this week, so it wasn't that hard to avoid it.
Because you get a pretty good idea of where the enemy is, the passive is super versatile and is good in situations like ambushing teams rotating in, cleaning out hiding stragglers after a firefight, checking whether you are safe after you finish wiping a squad, and getting information about buildings and areas before you go in them.
I think the biggest pro to Seer's passive over other recon passives like Bloodhound/Crypto's is that it provides a real time update to the enemy direction without actually revealing it to them. Crypto's drone just lets you look at banners for a vague idea of how many squads are in a 200M radius. Bloodhound's passive just gives you pretty sporadic trails that isn't the easiest to actually track enemies with. Seer's passive, although it has a shorter range, really lets you pinpoint a direction and decide on the next steps with your team.
So you may be thinking that inside the 75M range, you will always be detected by Seer, but that wasn't true, as I quickly discovered. Seer's heartbeat seeker actually detects a cone shaped field in front of you, which range is indicated via minimap. The field is whilte if you don't detect any heartbeats, but yellow if you do. Also, because 75 meters is a pretty short distance, chances are you are already hearing the other squad. It is still helpful to pinpoint the position though as sounds can be quite wonky sometimes. It's definitely handy, and I don't want to downplay Seer's passive at all, but it's also not foolproof.

Tactical: Summon micro-drones to emit a delayed blast that goes through walls interrupting and revealing enemies. (CD: 30seconds, 75m range, 8m diameter, 1.25s ability silence, 1.6s activation time)
Seer's tactical is a cylindrical blast of micro drones which interrupts and reveals enemies for 8 seconds. Unlike other legends, Seer's tactical reveals their health and shields as well. Can you guys believe that this thing used to also do 10 damage and was even easier to hit? While Seer's passive is his bread and butter, I think the tactical is one of the best abilities in the game in terms of solo queue. When you play with randoms, it is very easy to just ignore pings and call outs. However, ignoring a revealed enemy and their entire health bar for 8 whole seconds is very, very hard. The fact that it silences and disrupts abilities like cells, kits, and revives is just another hefty bonus.
As a result, I think playing as Seer helped the team play together more than any callout I made. We could easily focus the lowest health enemy first, and decide to chase/pull back with no need to communicate anything about the running legend.
However, this does come with it's drawbacks in that the obvious glowing cylinder basically reveals your location as well, and there is no guarantee that the cylinder hit every member of the enemy squad. This can lead to tunnel vision and give the non-detected squad members the ability to flank while your squad is hyper focused on that one revealed member.
Because the cylinder is only 4 meters in radius, it is pretty easy to dodge in a normal situation. But you don't have to worry, because there are tons of easy opportunities to hit a tactical, especially when the enemy is shooting, on top of railways, and final rings.
The tactical goes through walls, which means Seer can really see benefits in narrow areas as he can freely collect recon from the safety of his cover. This feature is almost essential to Seer though, because Seer has no mobility potential and needs all the intel he can get in order to not get caught out.
I think Seer's tactical is also amazing in hot drop situations. Unfortunately it is pretty lackluster in hand to hand combat, but knowing where enemies are in early game skirmishes are invaluable, and helped me decide whether I could revive my downed teammate or not. Also, as stated earlier, being able to see the enemy health bars lead to better coordination between teammates, and let me control how aggressive we should be playing.

Ultimate: Create a sphere of micro-drones that reveal the location of enemies moving quickly or firing their weapons within. (CD: 2 minutes, Uptime: 30 seconds, Radius: 30~35m, 125HP)
Seer's ultimate is a container of micro drones that creates a dome which tracks enemies moving rapidly or firing in real time. You can throw the container up to 45M on flat ground. Before you throw the container, you move normally with it out, and can cancel it with your weapons as well. Once you throw it, your ultimate has a radius of around 35M, meaning you can theoretically make it reach around 75~80M from where you are, which is about the range of your passive and tactical.
The ultimate can be used both offensively and defensively, but you have to be careful where you are throwing it because the core has only 125HP, and can be focused down quickly if it's just on open ground.
Personally, I enjoyed using it defensively in solo queue because I couldn't rely on teammates to work with the intel I gave them all the time. For defensive usage, you can use it to buffer away wary enemies from pushing your squad when pressured, or use it to stop any flanking enemy in their tracks. If you have a better position in the later circles, Seer can absolutely zone out third parties from trying to slowly flank you, and even feels oppressive. However, there can be situations where a third party is at a good location to just slam into your flank via jump pad or valkyrie ult, so using your ult doesn't mean people will always be respecting it.
In fact, Seer's ultimate means that you need to use the information gained to dispatch an enemy squad quickly and create situations where you are ready to zone out the next third party. Seer's ult is very visually telling and is a big reason why Seer attracts third parties, which is ironic because Seer is an amazing legend to initiate a third party, which leads to how the ultimate is used offensively.
Seer's ultimate gives him a distinct advantage in third parties because the counterplay to it is to get outside the zone. Yes, you can crouch or walk in order to not be detected by the ultimate, but when you are already in combat, negotiating a peace treaty with the enemy squad and silently crouch walking outside of the zone together isn't really a thing. So, teams either get stuck inside their cover, or run outside the zone before they engage again, which means teams end up moving outside buildings and important covers, which the Seer squad can take now.
I felt a lot of difficulty with teams who wouldn't actually give up their strategic positions though, and would simply be saying 'yeah what if you can see us? You can't force us from this place!' which is absolutely correct. Even if you can see them, it doesn't mean much when you are out of nades and don't have any meaningful way to force their hand.

Overall:
Because you don't have mobility but handle the recon job, it's pretty important to keep a close distance with teammates and make sure they are on the same page as you, As if they are overstepping, you can't go and cover them. This works the opposite way too. If you get to greedy and overstep your boundaries, you can't make it back out.
I got the best results with Seer when I was managing engagement and rotation paths for my team. Based on the amazing amount of information that I had at all times, I was able to call engage/retreat without hesitation, and created many amazing third party opporutnities. In those cases, Seer truly feels like a maestro of combat, artfully executing third party engagements. But without coordination, Seer struggles to follow his team and only creates confusion, instead drawing unwelcome guests to take advantage of the chaos themselves.
Overall, I think Seer was a fun character that left me thinking how much better he could have been in a premade squad, but only because he was so amazing in random teams already. The fact that you rely less on team callouts, while simultaneously able to give the best callouts on enemy position defintiely made him a strong team player.
Finally, here is everything in Spreadsheet form and I will add new legends as I go. Shadow Royale releases tomorrow I don't think this is something I should be judging legends on. After that is a new season, legend, and maps! Schedule wise I should be doing Crypto/Horizon, but i have the feeling that we will be locked into the new map for a while and I don't think that is fair to them. In that case, I will unlock and play 50 games of Ash on the new map and see what the new season will look like for me! And after that week, hopefully the map rotations are back and I can continue on to reviewing the older legends.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and if you have any cool tips for Seer, please feel free to leave some feedback!
